If you do not, you cannot connect to catid billers, or may cause other issues on the SSC biller.

== Common problems ==

If you have a binary version of Wine installed from a .rpm, .deb, etc., it's recommended to remove it before installing and setting up Wine from source, so as not to cause confusion.

Make sure you are running Continuum in a color depth of at least 16 ( View > Options > Graphics > Color Depth: ). Using 8-bit color depth is possible, but you have to check your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (etc.) file to make sure you have 8-bit Depth/Modes configured. Usually, a simple way to verify if you can safely use 8-bit color depth is to check whether you can set your desktop environment to use it.

If having problems with sound, use winecfg to enable (check) ALSA Driver (Audio tab) and set Hardware Acceleration: to Emulation.

Chat window will not appear when you task out. This is because Continuum under Wine doesn't understand that it is minimized, so it will never start the chat window.

If you get a libwine.so.1 error when trying to run Wine globally (instead of running the application from its source directory), add the following lines to your /etc/ld.so.conf file: /usr/local/lib and /usr/local/lib/wine. If problems still occur, copy libwin.so.1 to those locations from the winesource/libs directory.

ALT key does not function properly if it is bound to another XIM like kinput2 (e.g. tried to bring up map).

If connecting to a zone causes you to login as ^Banned, please run winecfg, select the Drives tab, select C:, Show Advanced, and make sure the Serial: value is set to a random number greater than 2000.

== Why it works ==

When Continuum runs, one of the first things it does is create another process of itself with some privileges restricted, such as the ability to call OpenProcess. When the child process attempts to repeat this step, it receives an error that OpenProcess failed, which tells the process that it is the child. The child process then proceeds to run the game.

Since Wine does not properly emulate this parent-child security, this source modification is necessary to get Continuum to run under Wine.

Alternatively, in Wine 0.9.12: @@ -2325,6 +2325,7 @@

Place your new cont.diff file inside the topmost directory of Wine's source code (that which includes the LICENSE file), and run cat cont.diff | patch -p1 to apply the patch. Follow with the usual ./configure && make depend && make to build Wine. If you'd wish to have this replace your current Wine installation or to install it globally, run make install as root.

It is important to run winecfg, select the Drives tab, click C:, Show Advanced, and set the Serial: value to a random number higher than 2000. If you do not, you cannot connect to catid billers, or may cause other issues on the SSC biller.

== Common problems ==

== Why it works ==

An LVZ is a file that can customize an arena beyond simply changing the map with a LVL. An LVZ can contain compressed files, map objects, screen objects, or a combination of the three. The server will send the LVZs to a [[Continuum]] client when it enters an arena for storage in the zone's directory (Continuum\Zones\[Zone Name]) along with the LVLs and news.txt for that zone. The primary way of creating an LVZ is the [http://www.shanky.com/cgi-bin/ryan/download.cgi?lvztoolkit.zip LVZ Toolkit] and the [http://forums.minegoboom.com/viewtopic.php?t=3907 Cross Platform Lvz Toolkit] (which includes bug fixes and yields tighter compression).
Continuum only supports 256 different images in all of your lvz files combined. If you exceed this limit, toggling the 257th image will turn on the 1st image. This is often undesired, so be careful.
== Adding/Replacing Files ==

Adding a file to an LVZ with the same filename (extension does not matter) as a default Continuum image or sound file will replace that file for that arena. Along with the standard BMP (.bm2) and WAV (.wa2) formats, Continuum supports [http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/ PNG], GIF, and JPEG — MP3 is ''not'' supported.

Adding a file to an LVZ with a different filename from one of the defaults will make that image available to be placed as a map object or screen object.
== Map Objects ==

Map objects are images placed by Continuum at a static location on the [[map]]. They can be animated in the normal way for [[SubSpace]]/Continuum, that is, with horizontal and vertical tiles representing frames. Their display time and display mode (when Continuum will display them) can be customized.
== Screen Objects ==
[[Image:Refpoints.gif|thumb|Click for larger view indicating the locations of the modifiers.]]
Screen objects are images placed by Continuum at a specific point on the screen or a point relative to one of the presets, meaning they will move around with the pilot. Like map objects, they can be animated and their display time and mode can be customized.

[[Image:Continuum_Main_Menu.png|thumb|Continuum Main Menu]]Continuum is a free [[Subspace|SubSpace]] [[Client|client]] developed by [[PriitK]] and [[Mr Ekted]]. The current official version is '''0.38'''. Continuum was developed as a clone of the [[Subspace|SubSpace]] client, but now contains original features such as [[Ship Settings#SeeBombLevel|Ship Settings:SeeBombLevel]] and [[LVZ]]s. Continuum is the official client of the [[SSC|SubSpace Central]] [[Billing Server]].

It was developed primarily because of the failures of SubSpace mainly in security. As the VIE encryption had been hacked, programs like [[Twister]] were available that would manipulate the network traffic into giving a player an unfair advantage over normal ones. Continuum uses a very secure protocol and effectively masks its code, disallowing the ASM rips that contributed to the downfall of SubSpace. Although a few attempts to crack the Continuum encryption have been made, none have been very successful. In short, Continuum saved SubSpace.

Akai: this still needs to be completely rewritten, but at least now I won't cringe every time I see it

[[Image:SS_screen.png|thumb|VIE SubSpace]] SubSpace is a massively multiplayer online game of death. Specifically, it is a top-down shooter much like Asteroids, in which a player chooses between 8 [[Ships]] to fly around and shoot other players with. Over time, other game types were developed for SubSpace such as Rabbit, [[Flag|Flagging]], [[Soccer]], Speed, [[King of the Hill]], and more.

Currently, SubSpace is run by its playerbase and distributed as a player-made client, [[Continuum]]. Also, some servers are running a player-made and Open Source server software, [[ASSS]].

Some SubSpace dates can be found in [http://wiki.aswz.com/index.php/SubSpace%20History here].

===History===

[[SubSpace]] began as a massively multiplayer (before that term existed) combat game dubbed '[[Sniper]]' in 1995 (later reincarnated as [http://infantry.station.sony.com/en/main.jsp Infantry]) but was quickly renamed and re-themed; it was made by Virgin Interactive Entertainment (VIE) and was one of the earliest action multiplayer online games, possibly the first semi-successful one.

For two years the game was in open beta and several [[zone]]s were hosted by the VIE servers. The problems started when the game went retail. The servers were still free, but you had to buy the game CD to play on them. The game wasn't advertised well (very small marketing budget) and in spite of a severely addicted, albeit small, player community VIE pulled out in 1997 and a year later turned their servers off with little more than a shrug.

The server software was included with the CD due to the foresight of one of the main programmers, so user-made and hosted [[zone]]s continued to be made, but without VIE there was no central control or client code updates and cheating was rampant. In 1998, a West European company based in [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland Finland] had purchased distribution rights just before VIE pulled the plug and their servers were initially used as a crutch while the American community regrouped. Slowly the community came together as strong servers were set up on the east and west coast of the US. The cheating was still choking the game to death, but a loyal legion of volunteers kept the torches lit while a handful of programmers began a new project in secret.

In 2001 these programmers unveiled a brand new client for [[SubSpace]] that had been reverse-engineered from the ground up to replace the aging VIE client. This new client was programmed by [[Mr Ekted]] and [[PriitK]] (aka Priit Kasesalu, one of the creators of [http://kazaa.com Kazaa]). It was called [[Continuum]] and allowed the community to arrest cheating and continue the development of the game.

Although now roughly nine years old, [[SubSpace]] is as popular and addicting as it's ever been. Some of the old VIE [[zone]]s are still there, now known as [[SVS]] zones, and many more new kinds of different [[zone]]s and settings have emerged. The recent updates to [[Continuum]] as well as extensive [[bot]] & scripting development throughout individual zones has allowed the entire community to constantly develop and evolve the gameplay and graphics.

For a little taste of nostalgia for vets and a glimpse into history for new players, there is [http://beginners.subspace.net/history/vie/ a mirror of the official VIE website] from 1997.
[[Akai]]: the "of course" was just an insinuation that .wa2 and .bm2 are the same type of thing, not meant as (eg) "Windows is, of course, gay" :p

"as with .wa2, of course" - because the two extensions function in the same manner

Tiles are what make up [[Maps|maps]] in [[SubSpace]]/[[Continuum]]. They are small images 16x16 [[Pixels|pixels]] in size. Tiles come from the map's [[LVL_Format#Tileset|tileset]] so you are limited to 190 tiles with a unique appearance. However with LVZ [[LVZ_Scripting#Map_Objects|map objects]] you can overcome this limit.

== Some facts ==
*There can't be more than 1048576 tiles in a map
*Since maps are 1024x1024 tiles big, that gives <math>2^1048578</math> possible maps, ignoring different tile graphics.
*Many things such as the ?warpto command use ''tile coordinates''. These start with (0, 0) at the top left of the map and go to (1023, 1023) at the bottom right.
Usually the zone owners are sysops. Most [[bot]]s require sysop to stay connected because they perform actions that would be considered cheating.
Sysops are granted power over lesser players. Sysops are generally the only staff members that can modify game files on the server such as maps or settings. Due to the remarkable insight of the [[VIE|original developers]] sysops have a range of commands that will give them an edge when playing against other players (aka cheating). [[Mod]] and [[smod]] commands are inherited.

SVS, or standard VIE settings are the original [[Settings| settings]] that came with [[SubSpace]]. These settings are often believed to be the most balanced, and hardest to master.
RGN Format

Akai: typo

RGN Format (version 1) is a format which was used to encode files (ending with .RGN) containing region information. This format is now deprecated, and replaced with the [[ELVL Format]] which contains region information inside the .lvl file. Nonetheless it may be useful to understand a version 1 region file if you come across it. [[Continuum Level / Ini Tool]] is capable of loading regions from a version 1 region file, and translating them to version 2 (eLVL) regions.

== The Format ==
A version one region file uses the extention .RGN and is an ascii file (meaning you can open an edit it in any simple text editor, like Notepad). There format contains two parts, a header, and the region definitions. Lines begining with a semicolon(;) are comments and are ignored. Blank lines are also ignored.

The header is the first line of text in the file. This must be:

asss region file version 1

If the header is incorrect, you do not have a valid version 1 region file. After the header you can define your regions. Regions are defined as sets of rectangles of [[Tiles]] (not [[Pixels]]). A region can also have an optional isBase flag, meaning that it's a base. Each region must also have a unique name (not a limitation of the format, but you can't define a region in two parts in the same file and expect it to work). Let's look over an example encoding of a region:

Name: MyBase
| gutkataj
| da5talal
| pxu3asai
isbase

The name is encoded after the "Name:". This is the name of the region you are about to define. After the name we have our rectangle defintions. These lines start with a '|' and then another character (space is used here). They are then followed by 8 characters (a-z, 0-6). These tell use the rectangle encoding. In the above example we have a single rectangle encoded as "gutkataj". The first two are the x encoding, and the next two y encoding of the upper left tile contained in this rectangle. The next two pairs of letters are the width and the height. So we have:

x      -> gu
y      -> tk
width  -> at
height -> aj

Now each one of these character represents 5 bits of encoded data. To encode 0 we would use 'a', to encode 1 we would use 'b'. This goes all the way up to encoding 31 which we would use '6'. You can treat each pair of letters as 10 bits put together to make a single number that is 0-1023 (conveniently these are the only tile that a map can have). We could get the x by doing something like decode(g) * 32 + decode(u). decode(g) would give us 6 and decode(u) would give us 20. So the x coordinate encoded would be 6 * 32 + 20 or 212. We could similiarly find the y, width, and height of the encoded rectnagle. All these rectangles together make up the encoded region. Here is an example of a complete version 1 region file:
